Example GPRS Application > Connecting Remote Serial Devices to Servers using GPRS Networks

A GPRS network allows remote monitoring or data collection equipment with serial RS232 connection to send data back to a command center. The GPRS router can be easily configured to relay any data received at its RS232 serial port to a data-collecting server with internet connection (static IP or with DYNDNS assigned name) over a GPRS network.

Example Solution

Connecting serial device to server over internet using GSM modem or GPRS router

In this example, an array of vibration sensitive sensors are connected to a monitoring and data logger. The data-logger is configured to send our an ASCII string of connected data via its RS232 serial port every 15 minutes. This data is received at the serial port of a FATBOX GPRSV2 router, encapsulated into TCP/IP packets and sent reliably over a GPRS network to an internet connected server running a monitoring software. The server needs to be connected to the internet via a static IP address or assiged a name using a DYNDNS service like www.dyndns.org.

Some of the features of the FATBOX GPRSV2 that facilitates succesful implementation of this solution includes,
  • Serial to TCP/IP or UDP transparent transport function
  • Dual-SIM card support for redundancy in critical applications
  • Sleep mode (cellular link disconnected) when serial port data idle to save data costs and power
  • Sleep mode 'wake' on data or remote 'call', e.g. from server using a modem
  • Dynamic DNS client to use with dynamic IP addressed SIM to allow remote connection from server
  • Built in Ethernet router for easy migration to newer IP based devices using same network and router
  • Wide power supply 5~30VDC ensure stability of operation
  • Industrial design and all metal construction for durability
