Efficient Remote Asset Management for G3 Gateways

SNMPv2 (Simple Network Management Protocol version 2) integrated in our FATBOX G3 will enable the remote monitoring of gateway’s operating conditions; and with the right tools even allow you to control aspects of its operation.

 

Users can monitor critical operating parameters e.g. cpu temp, device uptime, connected cellular network using software like:

 

  • Nagios XI

  • Spiceworks

  • Solarwinds

  • ManageEngine

  • Paessler PRTG

Tutorial: Setting up Nagios XI SNMP on the FATBOX G3 Gateway

Step 1: Enable SNMP in the FATBOX G3.

Securely login to the FATBOX G3 web console and go to the ‘SNMP’ menu.

Do take note of the following:

  • If SNMP is accessed only via local network LAN, do not enable the ‘SNMP access from WAN’ setting for improved security.

To activate the SNMP settings click on Update and initiate a Reboot (e.g. via Management menu).​

Step 2: Add a new SNMP monitoring service (e.g. Nagios XI)

For this set up example we are using a SNMP monitoring service like Nagios XI to provide an interface for our users to manage.

We start by creating an account and adding in our designated Device address and Host name.

Next we will need to specify the SNMP version, SNMP port and SNMP community string you are using. The current FATBOX G3 firmware supports both SNMP v1 and v2c.

  • SNMP version 1 is easy to set up and only requires a plaintext community. However it only supports 32 bit counters and not 64 bit counters.

  • SNMP version 2c is identical to version 1 but supports for 64 bit counters which enable interfaces to poll more accurate data. 

Step 3: Add Object Identifiers (OID) to define each agent for the manager service

Specify the OIDs that you'll like to monitor via the SNMP service using the reference chart below.

In our example:

We are monitoring the G3 CPU Temp using the OID: .1.3.6.1.4.1.51926.1.1.10.4.0

Once the SNMP settings has been updated in the Network Management Software, the user would be able to monitor remote gateway and set required alarm or triggers.
